Lisa & Frank talk weddings, structure and sleepovers
Lisa & Frank recently tied the knot in the very trendy and futuristic city of Rotterdam. It was quirky, fun, and a celebration of love not quite the norm of your standard wedding. We had a chat to Lisa about her wedding to see what little insights we could steal and what made their day unique to them.
Would you consider your wedding to be traditional?
I think that depends on what is traditional in your eyes — but in all, probably not.
Tell us about the structure of your wedding?
We started our wedding day in the morning at 9 am with a huge party, breakfast, music and a lot of alcohol, which was so incredibly fun. At 1pm we went for lunch (drunk a lot of alcohol again) and did wedding pictures with all the guests in funny costumes. In the evening at about 5pm we had a walking dinner (a stand around buffet) and at 8pm did the official ceremony. By the time we did the vows everyone was pretty wasted. So it’s definitely not how most people would schedule their “big day.” All of our friends we invited thought it was awesome, although some of my family members were a little unsure, asking: “is this how you’re going to spend one of the most important days of your life?” We finished the official ceremony at 11pm and wrapped the party up by having a sleepover with our best friends and family.
Did you keep many elements of a traditional wedding?
We kept a lot actually, just in a different order. We had a party, lunch, pictures, dinner and an official ceremony which are all typical parts of a wedding. But yeah, the pictures, ceremony and sleepover were not as traditional as what people were used to.
What parts of your wedding did you plan and what parts did you leave open for moments?
We planned the lunch and walking dinner, but that’s pretty much it. Oh, and the official ceremony of course— you can’t really change that. The rest of it was pretty much open for moments. At the party everyone was free to do a performance (whatever they wanted), to drink & eat or to turn on music they like. We had a DJ but people could DJ for a couple of songs if they wanted to. During the wedding pictures we only planned the part where we all had to wear funny costumes, we told our photographer that we just wanted spontaneous & fun pictures.
From your experience, can you give us any tips that you wish you’d known previously?
Haha, yes. Make sure you’re holding your party at a location where they don’t mind if you start drinking at 9.30 am with 150 people. A couple of waitresses from our party location weren’t briefed and thought it would be just a ‘normal wedding,’ so they freaked out when we started drinking and partying that early. That’s pretty much it though, there’s nothing further that I wish I would’ve known previously.
How would you sum your wedding up?
I don’t think our wedding was the most beautiful one, but it was definitely the funnest one!
